Saratoga Springs Department of Public Safety Capital Construction Committee
Upon election to office in early 2006, Commissioner Ron Kim formed a committee to explore the current need for a new police facility. The Public Safety Capital Construction Committee was formed, consisting of current and former police department leaders, former and current council members, and several community leaders who brought expertise to the committee that was tasked with studying this problem. The Saratoga Springs Police Department was formed through an act of the State Legislature created on April 26, 1887, and is still housed in the original police department. The department staff has increased by ten times the number of officers since 1887, yet the space allocated for the Police HQ has only doubled in size. The department lacks many basic infrastructure needs for policing in the 21st Century, like interview rooms for crime victims, witnesses or suspects in crimes. Overcrowding within the structure make basic policing requirements like a quiet and well organized communications center difficult, at best. The facility lacks a training room, sufficient rest rooms, and a host of other needs have been identified over the years. As a result of the work done by the Capital Construction Committee, plans for a new Police Department are being presented to the public at the City Council meeting on June 3, 2008. In connection with this presentation, the police department is offering tours of the current facility to provide community members an opportunity to see first hand the current situation and grasp a better understanding of the need for the new police facility being proposed. If you are interested in coming for a tour of the current police facility, please complete the form below OR call the Department of Public Safety Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM at 587-3550 x-513 and book an appointment with Danielle. Tours will be offered by appointments only. The department will close each group size at twenty (20) persons.
