Juvenile Aid Unit
The Juvenile Aid Unit is directly supervised by Sergeant John Catone and is comprised of Investigators, a DARE Officer, and a School Resource Investigator. The JAU has primary responsibility for:
The Juvenile Aid Unit Investigators trained in the multi-disciplinary team approach to investigating instances of suspected child physical abuse and/or sexual abuse. An Investigator is also assigned as the School Resource Officer at the Senior High School campus, and a uniformed Police Officer is assigned in JAU to teach DARE to all of the Saratoga Springs School District’s 5th graders. The Juvenile Aid Unit is responsible for numerous educational presentations to the public. Presentations range from robbery responses for the public to drug and violence prevention. The unit also does child ID's and fingerprinting under the auspices of Operation Safe Child at numerous locations throughout the year in collaboration with the Saratoga County District Attorney and the Saratoga Springs City School District.
Residents wishing to register their privately owned bicycles may do so by coming to the Juvenile Aid Unit, located within the Police Department at 5 Lake Avenue between 3:00pm and 5:00pm any week day. Registering your bike will assist this department in recovery should it be stolen. There is no charge for this service. Found bicycles that are unclaimed are sold at public auction each spring. The auction location is announced prior to the auction in The Saratogian Newspaper.
On June 8th, the police department received this letter from two aspiring police officer candidates requesting a visit with the police department. Although the department does not normally take members of the public on rides in department vehicles, we often provide scheduled tours of the department by school children and various youth organizations within our community. On June 11th, Aaron and Aiden LeClair visited with Investigator James Bell of the Juvenile Aid Unit, and were treated to a personally guided tour of the police department and one of our marked patrol vehicles. Following the tour, each received a complimentary Junior Officer badge from Investigator Bell. Group tours for youths can be scheduled by calling Police HQ at 584-1800 Monday through Friday during business hours. Please ask to speak with a member of the Juvenile Aid Unit. Tours may also be scheduled by eMail through Sergeant John Catone at jcatone@saratogapolice.org
