The Investigation Division is commanded by Lieutenant Gregory Veitch, and is comprised of three units, the Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU), Special Investigation Unit (SIU), and Juvenile Aid Unit (JAU). The Investigation Division handles the Sexual Offender Registry for the City of Saratoga Springs. The NYS Level 3 Sex Offender Registry can be accessed by calling 1-800-262-3257 or online here. The Criminal Investigation Unit is comprised of Investigators whose primary responsibilities include: Ø Investigation of all serious felony offenses; Ø Investigation of crimes where the victim has received serious physical injury that may result in death; Ø Investigation of unexplained or suspicious deaths; Ø Investigation of any offense and/or incident where a coordinated or extensive investigation is necessary or which may be beyond the capabilities of the Patrol Division; Ø Crime scene processing for preservation, documentation and collection of evidence at the scene of a crime; and Ø Control and management of the evidence and property room
The Special Investigation Unit is comprised of Investigators who are generally responsible for: Ø The suppression of all illegal drug activity from street level operation up to and including major criminal conspiracy efforts; Ø Maintaining and developing intelligence files relative to narcotics trafficking; Ø Developing and managing confidential informants and maintaining confidential informant files of the department; Ø Initiating and supervising counteractive measures; Ø Interagency coordination, cooperation and communication relative to enforcement of state and federal drug laws; Ø Other specialized investigations as assigned by the commanding officer; and Ø Management of all illegal drug evidence in the department’s custody.
The Juvenile Aid Unit is directly supervised by Sergeant Warren Wildy and is comprised of Investigators, a DARE Officer, and a School Resource Investigator. The JAU has primary responsibility for: Ø Coordinating investigations, arrests and/or diversions involving juvenile suspects under sixteen years of age; Ø Collecting, maintaining and disseminating information on juvenile records; Ø Developing programs to prevent and control juvenile delinquency; Ø Assisting officers from other divisions or units with juvenile arrests or diversions; Ø Maintaining a liaison with Family Court and other social agencies and coordination of procedural changes that affect the department's juvenile related activities; Ø Coordinating missing child investigations of persons less than sixteen years of age; Ø Assisting officers of other divisions or units in the investigation of any crime involving a child victim (less than sixteen years old; Ø Investigation of all child abuse or neglect cases within the city; Ø Registration and maintenance of the bicycle registration file and bicycle locker of the department; and Ø Maintaining a liaison with the Saratoga Springs City School District, its student population, and associated intra agency and interagency coordination through the School Resource Officer Program. |
